Certification Standards for Stroke Centres

The standards provide framework to improve stroke prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and support of patients coming to the Stroke Centres while simutaneously stimulating continuous quality improvement. The Standards for certification of Stroke Centre aims to improve access to quality stroke care and quality monitoring which will lead to improved stroke outcomes.
An MOU was signed in November 2022 by the National Accreditation Board of Hospitals (NABH) and World Stroke Organization (WSO) to initiate a stroke center certification program in India. In order to bring this program into compliance with NABH’s continuous hospital accreditation procedures, WSO standards and components have been combined with NABH format.

Outline of NABH Stroke Centre Certification Standards

  1. Access, Assessment and Information (AAI)
  2. Patient Care and Rights (PCR)
  3. Management of Medication (MOM)
  4. Hospital Infection Control (HIC)
  1. Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)
  2. Responsibility of Management (ROM)
  3. Facility Management and Safety (FMS)
  4. Human Resource Management (HRM)
  1. Ensures quality care with emphasis on patient safety leading to good clinical outcomes.
  2. Ensures standardization of protocols in the Stroke Centre.
  3. The patients are treated by trained & credentialed medical staff.
  4. Rights of patients are respected and protected
  5. It raises community confidence in the hospital’s Stroke care
  6. It improves overall professional development of Clinicians and Para Medical Staffs associated with the Stroke Centre
All NABH fully accreditted centres or hospitals having specialised stroke care facility which is functional for atleast 6 months and NABH standards are implemented for atleast 3 months. NABH conducts various training and awareness programmes round the year regularly. It is advisable that the aspirants of healthcare organizations attend Training for better understanding of the standards.
